Jiuzhaigou Aba History
The Aba Prefecture is located in the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, which is the second largest Tibetan area and is also the main agglomeration for Qiang minority. With complex terrain, diversity climate and the unique geographical environment, Aba well keep the animal and plant resources drying out in other places and still reserves the quiet and rustic magnificent natural landscape difficult to find in the industrial civilization, such as Jiuzhaigou, Huanglong World Natural Heritage.
In Ancient Times
Aba region has a long history. In prehistoric time, there existed people’s activities. In the early Tang Dynasty (618-907), the Dudufu (a kind of posture in ancient China) in Quanzhou had the right to control the area of Aba. In 638, Sontzen Gampo (a famous Tibet King) with his army in Songzhou welcomed Princess Wencheng at here. After occupying the western area of Songzhou, Sontzen Gampo sent his troops to live there for a long time as well as the immigrants.
In Ming Dynasty (1279-1368), the Aba belonged to the Songpan County in Aba Autonomous Region. At the beginning of Republic of China, the 16th chief inspector of the district in Sichuan Province managed six counties such as Songpan, Maoxian, Wenchuan, Lixian, 65 grasslands and 11 Tun Shoubei.
In Modern Time
In the early 1930s, the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army had a long march. But the most difficult and dangerous part in the march was in the Aba Prefecture. In here, the 11th meeting of the Political Bureau was held. Over 8 snow mountains above 4,000 meters and through the water meadows with few people, the central revolutionary government in minority was set up which was one of the earliest revolutionary regimes in minority. The Aba Prefecture is also called grassland in Snow Mountain. The Red Army fought for about 16 months in the area of Aba. 13 Quanzhou counties in the Aba Prefecture have been identified as the old revolutionary base counties by People’s government in Sichuan Province. In 1953, Tibet Autonomous Region in Sichuan was built up. In 1955, it was changed the name into Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Region.
The History of Jiuzhaigou
Jiuzhaigou County is located in the northern part of Sichuan Province and the northeastern part of Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture. It was called Yangdong in ancient times. In the regime of Emperor Yongzheng (1723-1736), the Nanpingying was built in Southern Level Ground so that this place was firstly called Nanping. In 1953, Nanping County was set up. In 1998, it was changed into Jiuzhaigou County. Today, Jiuzhaigou is a hot tourism destination for its beautiful landscape and minority culture, attracting thousands of visitors from home and abroad.
