Hong Kong Transportation
Hong Kong, with one of the world's best airports, is an ideal stopover for those who wish to travel deeper into the Orient. The city also boasts one of the world’s most efficient and convenient public transport system with subway trains, light rail, bus, minibus, ferry, tram and taxis. The streets, bus and subway signs are clearly marked in English. Octopus Card accepted by most public transport as well as many fast food chains and stores is an essential item when travelling in Hong Kong.

Taxis in Hong Kong are in three types with different colors indicating their areas of service and all of them serve the airport and Hong Kong Disneyland.
Red taxis operate in most of Hong Kong, except for Tung Chung Road and the south side of Lantau Island. The flag fall is HK$20 for the first two kilometers and a further HK$1.50 for every 200m thereafter.
Green taxis serve the rural areas of the New Territories, the airport and Hong Kong Disneyland. The flag fall is HK$16.50 for the first two kilometers and HK$1.30 for every 200m thereafter.
Blue taxis operate only on Lantau Island. The flag fall is HK$15 for the first two kilometers and HK$1.30 for every 200m thereafter.
Hong Kong International Airport
Hong Kong International Airport, 34 km from downtown, is one of the world's busiest international passenger airports. There are direct flights to Hong Kong from direct flights to most major cities in Oceania, Europe Asia and North America as well as flights to 40 major cities in China such as Beijing and Shanghai.
There is a half hourly helicopter service between Hong Kong and Macau. The trip takes 15 minutes and one-way fare costs HK$2,900 with extra HK$200 added on weekends and public holidays. The service is available at the Shun Tak Heliport at the Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Pier in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong Island.
Airport Transportation
The airport offers direct access to train, bus, taxi and hotel transport, as well as high-speed ferries to Mainland China.
The Airport Express train is the quickest and most comfortable transport from the airport to Central, also stops at Tsing Yi and Kowloon en route. The train departs every 10 minutes and the journey takes only 24 minutes to Hong Kong station. The one-way trip costs HK$60-100 and a round trip HK$110-180 depending on the distance travelled.
The well developed Airport Shuttle Bus system can take passengers to and from most parts of Hong Kong. It takes 25 minutes from airport to downtown area.
Taxis offer a fast and flexible service to and from Hong Kong International Airport. The attendant at a desk after walking through Customs can give an estimate of the fare for your destination. A taxi from the airport to Central costs around HK$250-350.

Long Distance Bus
Cross-boundary bus is a convenient way from cities in Guangdong Province such as such as Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Foshan and Zhongshan as well as Xiamen, Yangshuo and Guilin. Transit passengers at Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport can take a direct bus to Hong Kong.
City Buses
Buses in Hong Kong are plentiful and comfortable with cheap price and great views of the city scenery. The bus routes cover almost all of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories and it’s very convenient to get around anywhere in the city.
Minibuses
There are two kinds of minibuses: green minibuses operating on specific routes at fixed prices and red minibuses operating on not fixed routes. Minibuses are only suitable for those who are familiar with Hong Kong.
Trams
The service is from 06:00 to 0:00 and only available on Hong Kong Island through the busiest thoroughfares including Western district, Wan Chai, Happy Valley, Causeway Bay and North Point. The fare is HK$2 and Octopus Card is accepted.
The Peak Tram between the Garden Road in Central and the Peak Tower offers magnificent views over the harbor and skyscrapers of Hong Kong. The service is from 7am to midnight every day at about 10 minute intervals.
Get In
Hong Kong Hung Hom Railway Station is close to the Hong Kong Coliseum and you can get there by Bus Nos.11K, 11X, 21, 260A, 260X, 81C, 87D, N216, N241, N271 and N281 as well as East Rail or a taxi.
There are trains from and to Beijing, Shanghai and cities in Guangdong like Guangzhou, Dongguan (Changping), Foshan and Zhaoqing.
Get around
MTR
It is an efficient way to get around Hong Kong and visit the city's fantastic attractions. The ten MTR lines include Island, Tsuen Wan, Kwun Tong, Tseung Kwan O, Tung Chung, West Rail, East Rail, Ma On Shan and Hong Kong Disneyland, as well as an Airport Express. Single-ticket, one-way fares are from HKS4 to HK$26 depending on the distance. Octopus Card is accepted with discount price.
Light Rail
It mainly serves the north western part of the New Territories including Yuen Long, Tuen Mun and Tin Shui Wai, There are 12 light rail routes and the fare is charged according to your travel distance. It is cheaper to use an Octopus Card.
Get In
There are daily direct sailings transfer between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, Macau as well as cities of Guangdong Provinces such as Zhuhai and Zhongshan. A weekly ship to Xiamen is also available. The four cross-boundary ferry piers are Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal, China Ferry Terminal, Sky Pier and Tuen Mun Pier.
Ferry
The many piers in Hong Kong make it convenient to travel between the islands by ferry. Octopus Card is accepted on the ferries. The Star Ferry operates ferries across the Victoria Harbor at Central and Tsim Sha Tsu piers. Ferries to Cheung Chau or Mui Wo are operated by New World First Ferry Services Ltd and the service is available at Central, Cheung Chau or Mui Wo piers. The Hong Kong and Kowloon Ferry Ltd operates ferry from Central to Lamma Island at Central and Lamma Island piers.
