Elegantly standing beside the western bank of the Li River, Fubo Hill (Wave-Subduing Hill) is one of the remarkable landmarks of Guilin. Given to the ancient myths and legends, it lures thousands of tourists from all directions.
Located in the northeast of Guilin close to the Duxiu Peak (Solitary Beauty Peak), Fubo Hill concentrates hill, cave, stone, pavilion and antique into an area of less than 10,000 square kilometers. It stretches 120 meters long, 60 meters wide and soars 213 meters in elevation on the west bank of Li River.
Origin of Name - Fubo Hill
Since the galloping river water is always blocked here and eddied, creating wavelets, the hill is considered to have the power of subduing waves. Moreover, it was on this hill that a temple in commemoration of General Fubo was built in the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907), which gave rise to the name Fubo Hill.
What to See
Composed of multistage mountain gardens, Fubo Hill focuses on many natural landscapes and ancient antiques. Famous scenic spots are the Pearl-Returning Cave, Thousand Buddha Cave, and Sword Testing Rock and so on. Upon entering the gate, there is a large rice pot left behind from the Yue Temple - it's big enough to cook rice for 1000 people.
The Second Terrace of the Hill
Encircled by cloisters which combine the first and second terrace in an ingenious manner, it offers a lot of fun with the zigzagging road. In the well-tended garden by the cloister, trees and flowers grow prosperously. Pavilion is arranged in front of the cloister in which features a more than 300-year-old iron boiler which weighs above 1,000 kilograms (2204.6 pounds) with the diameter of one meter. It is the famous Thousand-People Boiler. Together with the iron bell situated at the entrance of Pearl Returning Cave, they are two huge relics from a Qing Dynasty temple and the inscriptions on them are still discernible. When wandering alongside the cloister up to the third terrace, it is possible to rest in the tearoom featuring a court.
Pearl-Returning Cave
Nestled at the foot of the Fubo Hill, Pearl-Returning Cave is like a maze for its charming rock and stalactites and the interior statues. Legend has it that an old fisherman picked a great glittering pearl from the cave and angered the Dragon King. Hence, people were sunk into a series of misfortunes. The feudal official advised him to return the pearl at once, and so he did. Thus, the Dragon King stopped raising the devil waves, and humans' lives became peaceful once more. To memorize the event, people entitled the cave "Pearl-Returning Cave." The inner cave is exquisitely carved, including more than 100 pieces of Tang statues and Song carvings. It stretches 120 meters long with the height of 4-6 meters. Visitors have to enter by boat.
Sword-Testing Rock
Lies in the east gate of the Pearl-Returning Cave, it is shaped as if a floating pillar. It presents a tapering character, in a shape of a pillar plunging from the ceiling into the water surface cut by a sharp sword. It is said that this scenery is caused by the General Fubo who tested his sword on the rock.
Thousand-Buddha Cave
Strolling along the stairs near the Sword-Testing Rock, you will arrive in the Thousand- Buddha Cave where collects 239 cliff statues of Buddha deriving from Tang Dynasty. Among them, a painting of Mi Fu, a renowned artist, done by the artist himself can be found in the cave. These statues inside the cave have proved the contemporary flush.
