Nanjing Museum

Nanjing Museum is the first and one of the largest museums in China, which currently has more than 400,000 items in its permanent collection, including enormous collections of Ming and Qing imperial porcelain.

Covering an area of 70,000 square meters, Nanjing Museum is one of the largest museums in China. The predecessor of Nanjing Museum was the preparatory department of the National Museum, which established in 1933. Being located at the southern foot of the Zijin Mountain and on the north of inner Zhongshan Gate, it was the first museum established in China. The two exhibition halls (history and art) imitate the palatial architecture of the Liao Dynasty (907-1125) and occupy a floor area of 35,000 square meters.

History

Cai Yuanpei, the modern democratic revolutionary, educationist and the president of the national academe under central authorities of the state, proposed to build three halls of “humanity”, “craft”, and “nature” originally. Because the current political situation, only the “humanity hall” was established, which is just the Nanjing Museum. The main building was designed by Liang Sicheng (1901-1972) in the 1930s combining Chinese and Western architectural styles. It is regarded as the masterpiece in the modern architectural history.
