The Confucius Temple was the second largest Confucius temple all over the country. Being different from other temples, the Confucius temple set Qin Huai river as its panchi (a semi-circular pond).
Located on the bank of Qin Huai River in Nanjing, the Confucius Temple was built to consecrate and worship the famous ancient philosopher and educator, Confucius. Now the Confucius Temple has became one of the best scenery spots in the Qin Huai River scenic belt. Covering an area of about 26,300 square meters, the Confucius Temple set the Dacheng Hall as its center. The construction on both sides is symmetric. Now it was classified as a Municipality Protected Historical site.
History
The Confucius Temple was first built in 1034. Generally, the ancient architectural complex of Confucius Temple consists of Confucius Temple, the Imperial Academy and Jiangnan Gongyuan. Burnt down and rebuilt several times, the Confucius Temple reveals an architectural style of Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. The Confucius Temple is not only a historical and heritage building but a museum that reveals the Nanjing customs and popularizes the national culture. Since the renovation in 1984, it has received more than 600 thousand tourists. As the central spot of Qin Huai Scenic Belt, the Confucius Temple welcomes the guests all over the world with a new look and first-class service.
What to enjoy
Zhaobi (the screen wall)
On the south bank of the Qin Huai River, there is the longest screen wall in China which is 110-meter-long (about 120 yards) and piled with bricks.
Panchi (a semi-circular pond)
What makes it different is that it sets Qin Huai River, a natural river as its pool.
The Dacheng Hall
The main hall of the Confucius Temple is the Dacheng Hall, which is 16.22 meters high, 28.1 meters wide and 21.7 meters deep. The largest Confucius portrait is hanged inside the hall, which is 6.50 meters high and 3.15 meters wide. There displays 15 kinds of ancient musical instruments. There will hold performance regularly. If you were there, you can enjoy the music in Spring and Autumn period, which was more than 2000 years ago.
Jiangnan Gongyuan
Jiangnan Gongyuan was the biggest exanimation school in China. It was built to choose officials in ancient times. The development of Gongyuan began in the Southern Song Dynasty (1127- 1279), expanding into the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) Dynasties, ending in the reign of Emperor Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty. The modern exhibit contains forty examination cells plus a small museum, which claims to be the only specialized museum in China dedicated to the imperial examination system.
Amusement
The activities here are plentiful, with the lantern fair in Lantern festival, the folk culture fair, and the food festival, etc.
Delicious Snacks
With a long history and more than 80 varieties snacks, Qin Huai snack is regarded as one of the four snack group in China. Some of the snack was identified as “the eight unique of Qin Huai”, including the spiced bean, tea flavored egg, yuhua tea, sesame seed cake, scallion cake, shredded chicken noodles, beef soup and small sweet dumplings ,etc.
