As the core part among all the scenic spots in Lijiang, Shuhe Naxi Village is a well-preserved confluence for trade along the Old Tea Horse Road.

Walking about 4 kilometers northward from the Lijiang Old Town, you will see a peaceful village perched at the foot of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Shuhe Naxi Village. It is one of the earliest habitations of Naxi people. Enjoying the home of spring and cobbler at the same time, Shuhe Naxi Village has offered the best leather products for the Old Tea Horse Road. Compared with Lijiang Old Town, it has the more authentic folk content.

Town of clean water

North of the village locates two spring pools, respectively named Jiuding Dragon Pool and Shuhe Dragon Pool. The water from the springs is clean and clear has feed people in the village.

Town of leather

Owing to the development of the Ancient Tea Horse Road, a batch of craftsmen from South China was employed by the Mu’s Family, producing a large number of leather products. Thus the town is also called Town of Cobblers.

The traces of the Tea Horse Road

Many things displayed in the village have shown the trace of the Ancient Tea Horse Road. It is not hard to imagine the businessmen shipped their goods, passing by the old stone bridges and smooth flagging. Various junks from India, Nepal and Tibet can be found in the village.

Shuhe Square Market

Similar to the Lijiang Old Town, there is a square street in the middle of Shuhe Naxi Village. It is named Shuhe Square Market which is served as an activity center for the local residents.

Rivers and houses

Built along the mountainside, Shuhe Naxi Village is traversed by two rivers on each side.. Rivers and roads make a dense web and link the town in a tight structure just like a honeycomb. People use stones in the nearby mountains to make the walls of their houses. Compared to those in the Lijiang Old Town, the houses here are even more natural.

Tie-dye in the village

The famous Duan’s Dyehouse is located in the village. Behind the shop, it is the workshop for tie-dying. There are many dye vats bubbled with various kinds of dyestuffs. The fine fabrics are hung on the bamboo, which has attracted many tourists.

Red leaves

There are many lacquer trees on the mountain west of Shuhe Naxi Village. Every fall the leaves turn red. Shining under the warm sunlight, it is more enchanting. If you are here during the autumn, do not miss it.
