With a history of over 700 years, Wangfujing Walking Street, which is now considered as the central heart of Beijing City, is the most well-known and prosperous street with modern and fashion trends.
Wangfujing is a famous commercial street in Beijing. Located at the north of East Changan Avenue in downtown Beijing, the 1800-meter long street has a history of over 700 years. The main shopping area is the pedestrian street which is very popular for shopping among tourists and residents of Beijing.
History
Wufujing Walking Street was first built in 1267 in Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). In Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), there were ten princely residences (Wangfu in Chinese) on the street so it was named Wangfu Street. Later in the Qing Dynasty, more and more residences and commercial activities were gathered around the well (Jing in Chinese). Thus, the street got its name Wangfujing Street.
Previously, it was also known as Morrison Street in English, named after the Australian journalist George Ernest Morrison. Today, Wangfujing Walking Street becomes sister street of the Champs-Elysees in Paris. It is the capital’s most famous shopping streets and considered as the central heart of Beijing city. The street is lined with dozens of large department stores, feature store, antique shops and time-honored brands and it is home to around 280 famous Beijing brands.
Famous Shopping Malls and Stores
New Dongan Plaza: Located at the south end of Wangfujing Walking Street, it is the former Dongan Department Store, the earliest of its kind in Beijing. Beijing APM at the above floors of the store has over 160 shops ranging from luxury brands, cinemas, and game center to food zones.
Old Beijing Street is an underground street in New Dongan Plaza. Built in Ming and Qing styles, the street is gathered with well-known time-honored stores selling shoes, hats, silk cloth, scissors, Chinese brushes and ink-stick, jade, teas, desserts, pickled vegetables and roast duck. Famous ones include Neiliansheng’s shoes, Ruifuxiang’s silk clothes, Daiyuexuan’s inks and brush pens , Jiguge’s jade and antiques and Guixiangcun’s pastry, etc.
Oriental Plaza: Situated at No.1 on East Chang'an Avenue at the south end of Wangfujing Walking Street, it is one of the largest commercial complexes in Asia. The mall features flagship stores of over 40 first top brands like Trussardi, Miss Sixty and Costumeuomo, Sisley, Vera Moda, Morgan, Soda, TSE, Max Mara, Bally and Piko.
Wangfujing Department Store: Located at No. 225 in Wangfujing Street, it is one of the most popular in Beijing, featuring many foreign brands such as Calvin Klein, Nina Ricce, Gucci, Prada, Lanvin etc.
Wangfujing Bookstore is one of the city's biggest and most comprehensive bookstores, very popular among many foreigners in Beijing. There are a great number of books written in English ranging from literature, history, politics, travel, art to cooking.
Famous Restaurants and Snack Street
Quanjude Roast Duck Restaurant, one of the best restaurants serving Beijing Roast Duck with a history of nearly 150 years, has its branch at here.

How to Get to Wangfujing
With an ideal location in the city center, Wangfujing Walking Street is very easy to be accessed.
By bus: Take Bus No. 103, 104, 108, 111, 812 and get off at Dengshi Xikou; or take Bus No. 1, 2, 4, 10, 20, 103, 104, 120, 420, 802, 803, 814 and get off at Wangfujing.
By subway: You can take subway line 1 and get off at Wangfujing.
