At the end of Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), many high ranking officials’ family fortune declined. In order to keep their living, the family members took out the curios to sell in the market. However, this behavior was considered disrepute in their eyes. So they made the trade with cheap price at midnight, the time which was considered ghost would appear. Gradually, the market got famous for its cheap and good curios.

Today, the market becomes the largest one in China dealing with craftworks like porcelain, jewels and jades, ancient propaganda pictures, calligraphies and paintings, traditional Chinese furniture, stamps, etc. There are six areas in the market namely booth area, ancient house area, classical furniture area, modern collection area, stone carvings area and dining area.
