Grand View Garden is an imitation landscape garden based on the classic Chinese novel Dream of the Red Chamber. The garden was built when the television series based on the novel was filmed.

Readers of the classic Chinese novel, 'Dream of the Red Chamber', must have deep impression on the chapter when Grandma Liu becomes dizzy at the first sight of the garden. They keep asking themselves and image how beautiful is the garden. Today, they didn’t have to image as they can see it in real life. In the novel, the garden is built when Yuanchun (the eldest daughter of Jia family who became an imperial concubine) visited her home after she married with the emperor.

Grand View Garden, built between 1984 and 1989, is an imitation landscape garden based on the novel when the TV series Dream of Red Mansion was filmed. Situated in Xuanwu District in southeast Beijing, this garden is skillfully designed with more than 40 scenic spots such as palaces, pavilions, cloisters, courtyards, water features and rockeries as well as a nunnery.

Visiting Guide

The main attractions in the garden are the courtyards with residences of the main characters in the novel. The dwellings are in traditional architectural style of Ming and Qing dynasties.

Enjoyment Red Courtyard (Yihongyuan in Chinese), the most beautiful and gorgeous one in the garden, is the residence of Jia Baoyu, the principal character in the novel. Bamboo Lodge (Xiaoxiangyuan), the dwelling of Lin Daiyu (heroine of the novel), is a small and simple courtyard decorated in light-green with mottled bamboos indicating the heroine’s melancholy character.

Guensiyi Palace is the major attraction in the garden. It is the place where concubine Yuanchun lived when she visited her family. In front of the palace stands a grand jade stone Paifang (a Chinese architectural gating style as an arch). Daguan Tower is at the rear of the courtyard and the whole courtyard is in royal and luxury style.

Beijing Red Mansion Culture and Art Museum in the garden has a large exhibition of Dream of the Red Chamber. The exhibition comprises of seven parts, trying to display the profound culture and art of the novel through a large number of items, information and scenes.

Activities

Every year in Spring Festival, Grand View Garden has a temple fair from lunar Jan.1 to Jan.5. During the period, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy performance Yuan Concubine's Visit. At that time, visitors can appreciate excellent performances as well as delicious local snacks. The night activity at the evening of Mid-August Festival is also very popular in Beijing. Besides, there is a night performance at evening from May to October. During the performances, actors and actresses dress in ancient costumes and narrate the specific plots from the novel excellently.
