Changan Grand Theater is a modern Peking opera theatre which features English subtitles above the stage and combines traditional architecture styles with modern facilities perfectly.
Located in Guanghua Changan Building on the north on East Changan Street, Beijing, Changan Grand Theater is a place where visitors can enjoy the wonderful Peking Opera performance. First built in 1937 and restored in 1996, it is a modern theater with advanced facilities in its traditional architecture styles. This theater features English subtitles above the stage, which is different with many other opera theatres.
Decorated with traditional Peking opera theatre ornaments in its interior, the theater can seat 800 people with its various types of seats such as the tea house, the rowed seats, and the VIP box, common box. The computer controlled multi-functional stage and advanced sound and light facilities are highlights of the theater, making it one of the best Peking opera theatres for acoustics.
Everyday, the theater has special organized opera performances with English subtitles for foreign tourists while in Saturday and Sunday afternoon, there are traditional Peking Opera performances. The simple but lively sculpture of a Peking Opera facial masks stands in front of the theater. On the first floor of the theater, visitors can buy souvenirs such as calligraphy, facial makeup, painting and video. The museum on the second floor exhibits Peking opera costumes, make-up and artifacts.
