Situated seven miles to Jiayuguan City in Gansu Province. the overhanging Great Wall is an important part of Chinese ancient defensive work of Jiayu Pass.

The Overhanging Great Wall was an extension of the Great Wall and served as an indispensable part of Chinese ancient defensive work of Jiayu Pass. Located seven miles to Jiayuguan in Gansu Province and four miles to the northwest of the pass city of Jiayuguan Pass, Overhanging Great Wall was built in the year of 1539 during the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). Because it was built on a ridge with 45 degrees, which makes it looks like a dragon overhanging the slope, it was called Overhanging Great Wall.

The wall was built with the local gravel and yellow earth. At present only 750 meters of the original 1,500 meters of the wall remains standing in the desert. It was renovated in 1987 and there are now a main path, battlements and 3 towers, one of which is right in the middle while the other two are on each end of the Great Wall. Overhanging Great Wall looks majestic and its magnificence and appearance resembles the Badaling Great Wall in Beijing, so it is also called “the Western Badaling Great Wall”.

For the convenience of climbing, 400-stairways were built in the renovation of 1987. The steps are so steep that it is quite a challenge to climb up the top of the Great Wall even with the 400-stairways. But when you stand on the top of the great wall, you will realize that all painstaking efforts are worth. Looking around, you will see the boundless desert extending to the faraway places and only a few oases dotted in it, which shows that there is still life fight against the abominable natural environment tenaciously.
