Jiayu Pass is located in about 6 kilometers east of Jiayuguan, Gansu Province. Built in 1372, Jiayu Pass is the western end of the Great Wall of the Ming Dynasty and a strategic passage of the ancient Silk Road at the western part of the Hexi Corridor. As one of the passes of the Great Wall, along with Shanhai Pass, Jiayu Pass is the biggest pass in the Great Wall and the largest in China. When Jiayu Pass was firstly built, it was a dirt city with a height no more than 6 meters and an area of 2,500 square meters. As time went by, the pass what we see now is about 33,500 square meters. It is located in the Jiayu Highland of the Jiayu Hill, hence its name. The pass consists of three sections, including the outer city, the inner city and the Urn city.
With a perimeter of 733 meters, a height of 10.7 meters and an area of more than 33,500 square meters. Jiayu Pass is trapezoid. Two gates were set on both sides of the pass, one is Guanghua Gate and the other one is Rouyuan Gate. Both of them are built with Urn city. Fourteen embrasured watchtower, turret, attic tower and gate towers can also be found in the pass. It is the most intact among the passes on the Great Wall.
The Last Brick Remaining
The Last Brick Remaining refers to the brick put on the eaves of the gate tower of the western enceinte. It is said that when Jiayuguan was being planned, the official in charge asked the designer to estimate the exact number of bricks required. With the help of the craftsman, the designer gave him a number of 99,999. The official was doubted about his number and added one brick. When the construction was finished, all the material have been used up except a piece of brick. So it is called the last brick. Now the tourists are coming here to have a look at this brick and shows their admiration to the intelligent craftsman in ancient times.
