Red Hill is the best place to view the whole city of Urumqi. It is like a huge dragon proudly standing in the center of Urumqi and is a symbol of Urumqi.

Red Hill is located in the Red Hill Park. It gained the name because of the body of the mountain with a reddish brown color. On September 26th, 1949, Xinjiang was peacefully liberated. The hilltop of Red Hill is covered by green forest in order to make Red Hill famous again. Since 1985, a massif park was born as the center “Quelling Dragon Tower”, and this tower has a history of more than two hundred years. It is present-day Red Hill Park. There are Red Hill Tower, wayside pavilions, Outlook Building, artificial waterfalls, temples and so on in the park. This is the best place to view the whole city of Urumqi on the peak of Red Hill.

Legend of Red Hill

It is said that in ancient times a red dragon fled from Heavenly Lake of Bogda Peak and the Heavenly Empress caught it and chopped it in half with her sword. The two parts of dragon’s body formed two hills. The western one is Yamalike Hill and the eastern one is Red Hill. The sword changed into the Urumqi River. Although this is a legend, topographic pictures show us that the two hills used to be one, but were separated into two parts due to stratum rupture.

The tower in the Red Hill is a unique scene in Urumqi. A tower named “Quelling Dragon Tower” was built in the year of 1788 (Qing Dynasty), and now it is still in a good condition. It is a sign and symbol of Urumqi permanently.

Outlook Building

It is at the top of Red Hill. You will have a panoramic view of the whole of Urumqi. All beautiful sceneries are in your eyes.

Martyr' Monument

National hero Lin Zexun dedicated his life to burn drugs. His statue was placed in the park is in honor of his feats. Red Hill has become the first education base for dug control in Xinjiang.

Big Buddha Temple

Big Buddha Temple is a Chinese Buddhism temple. It is reported that there were many ancient temples in Red Hill, which were built in the year of 1797 before and after. In 1933, ancient temples all were destroyed, but only the tumbledown gate of Big Buddha Temple was left. Big Buddha Temple was repaired in 1989. The main buildings in the temple include Hall of Heavenly King, Mahavira Hall, a Mercy Buddha Hall, and josses include Sakyamuni, Maitreya, Guanyin and so on. The ancient temples in Red Hill embody Chinese culture.

Today, modern entertainment facilities and ethnic performances bring the park a new and lively image. In the park, there always have some activities like temple fairs, folk custom exhibitions and so on. In winter, in the period of Silk Road Ice and Snow Festival held in Urumqi, Red Hill is a place to show kinds of ice sculptures.
