Famous for the camellia in its yard, Yufeng Lamasery shows a conjunct architectural style of Han Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism, Taoism and the local Naxi Dongba Religion. You will feel a different spring in the fragrance of camellia here.

Perched at the southern foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Yufeng Lamasery is about 13 miles away from the Lijiang City. Constructed during the reign of Kangxi Emperor in Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), it is one of the reputed lamaseries in Lijiang. An old camellia in the yard has been known worldwide in spite of the small scale of Yufeng Lamasery.

Layout

Facing the east, Yufeng Lamasery is a typical quadrangle dwelling consists of gate house, main hall and left and right wing-yards. To be symmetrical harmony in overall arrangement, it is different from the residential tower structure lamaseries in Tibetan area. Surrounded with lush pines and murmuring springs, it is indeed beautiful scenery.

The King of Camellia

There are three yards in Yufeng Lamasery. The popular camellia is located in the Northern Yard, planted in Ming Dynasty of Chenghua Period (1465-1487). Owning a long history of more than 500 years, this camellia is grafted from two categories of camellia, “lion’s head” and “early pink”. It is 34 centimeters in diameter and 2 meters high. Surprisingly, its crown occupies about 56 square meters.

Camellia in the Yufeng Lamasery

Each spring, the camellias are blooming, which adds colors and vitality for the lamasery. At the beginning of summer, flowers started to wither. During the 100 days in the seven festive, they blossom in batches successively. More than 20,000 camellias are there in a year. Seeing from far aside, the flowering shrubs are as if a peacock in his pride.

Naxi Mosaic

Immediately below the tree is a well-preserved Naxi mosaic. Made up of dark and light pebbles, this mosaic is similar in style to many in the area. The central motif is the symbol of longevity, bordering this are bats - a totem animal for the Naxi. This is common to many mosaics, but here the bats are almost like butterflies.
