Lived by Joseph Rock, a well-known Austrian-American explorer and botanist who has been praised as ��the Father of Naxiology��, the residence lures thousands of tourists.
Located in Yuhu Village, about 10 kilometers from the Lijiang Old Town, the Former Residence of Rock has left a profound meaning in Naxi people’s heart. It was the residence for Joseph Rock, a well-known Austrian-American explorer and botanist who has been praised as “the Father of Naxiology”.
Who is Rock?
Rock is short for Joseph F. Rock (l884-1962), an Austrian-American explorer and botanist, was the first foreign scholar to disseminate the traditional long-isolated Naxi culture to the outside world. He was also a naturalist and photographer that spread the beautiful Lijiang to the western countries. Lived for 27 years in Yuhu Village, a small, quiet and mountainous village, Rock had been studied the history and Dongba characters of the Naxi ethnic group.
Layout of the residence
The residence is consisted of three rooms. East of the site is the headquarters of the US National Geographic Academy. Upstairs is the living room with all his personal possessions. North to the building is the "Exhibition Hall of Former Residence of Dr. J.F. Rock", where many pictures were taken by Rock and many objects imported from western countries, such as a shotgun and a fur overcoat.
Exhibition Hall
In memory of Rock, a exhibition hall was built at the downstairs of the Former Residence of him, where mainly exhibits the belongs of Rock including a woolen coat, shotgun, dental instruments, carpenter’s tools and leather cases which were all brought from his country by Rock.
Yuhu Village
About ten miles northward from the Lijiang Old Town, Yuhu Village is an ancient village with beautiful scenery perched at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain which is also the last village in Lijiang. Houses in the village were made of a unique stone called "monkey head" by Naxi people. There is a Yuhe Lake beside the village. Water in this lake comes from melted snow of the mountains.
In 1949, Rock left Lijiang after 27 years’ life here. In 1962 when he was ill in bed in Hawaii, he said for many times that he’s rather die in the white snow and flower shrubs at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
