Great Wall Culture
Great Wall of China is a common name of the large-scale military project aiming to resist the invasion of tribe union in ancient times. With a total length of 8,851.8 kilometers, it starts from Jiayuguan Pass within Gansu Province in the west and ends at Shanhaiguan Pass within Hebei Province in the east. Listed into the World Culture Heritage on December 1987, the Great Wall also becomes one of the Seven Wonders in the world. As one of the great wonders made by ancient Chinese people, the Great Wall of China witnesses the long Chinese history and its culture. That is to say, it is the symbol of Chinese long history and culture. And it left us a lot of beautiful legends and stories.
The Legend of Meng Jiangnv
During the Qin Dynasty (221BC-206BC), there was a woman named Meng Jiangnv. She fall in love and married with Fan Qiliang as her husband, but Fan was caught to build the Great Wall. Soon, one year passed, but there was not any news about Meng Jiangnv’s husband. She became too worry to eat and sleep, and decided to look for him. On the way, she came through many difficulties but as soon as she arrived, she was told that her husband had already died. After hearing this thunderbolt news, she suddenly began to cry earth-shattering which caused a part of the Great Wall collapsed. This legend not only shows us the true love story between Meng Jiangnv and her husband but a fact that the Great Wall is the production of many Chinese common people.
The Legend of Carrying the Bricks by Goats
The construction of Great Wall was really a huge one especially in ancient times without any modern machines. Hence, all the bricks used in construction only can be carried via manual work. Another bad news was the bricks were fired over 20,000 meters away. Workmen should first transport the bricks to the bottom of the wall and then carried them on back which not only made them exhausted but wasted time. Even in this case, the supply fell out of demand often. One day, a boy came here to herd goats; while seeing this, one workman had a brainwave in a sudden and unloosened his belt with some bricks on the two pints and put on the back of the goat. Then, the goat carried the bricks briskly to the wall. The others followed.
The Legend of the Beacon Tower
In 771BC of Zhou Dynasty (11th century BC- 711 BC), there was a pretty lady named Bao Si. Later she married to King You as the queen and King You liked her very much, but she never smiled. King You thought and tried many ways but still failed. One day, one official told King You one suggestion to fire the beacon tower, then these subjects would be fooled and Bao Si maybe would smile. Later, all expectation came true. And Bao Si smiled. After more than one times in this way, when the enemies invaded, King You fired the beacon to ask for real help, however, no one came because they had been fooled many times. Finally, King You was killed and the Western Zhou was conquered.
The above three are just a small part of legends and stories on the Great Wall. During its long history, there are many other beautiful ones. All of them play an important role to keep Chinese history and culture vivid and alive.
