In order to memorize the outstanding poetess and musician Amannishahan, the tomb was built in 1992. With unique design and Islamic style, Amannishahan Tomb is a must see in Hotan.

Covering an area of 1,050 square meters, Amannishahan Tomb was built on a square base with a height of 2 meters, a width of 10 meters and a length of 10 meters. The tomb is 22 meters high and the top of the tomb is round. The unique Islamic tomb was built to memorize Amannishahan, who collected and organized the Twelve Muqam known as the “mother of Uygur music.” The name of the Twelve Muqam was inlaid on the wall. When we walked up the steps of the tomb, we can find 14 white steps and 20 pillars, which represent Amannishahan married to Yarkant King as a concubine at the age of 14 and spent 20 years to collect the Twelve Muqam respectively.

Amannishahan

Born in 1526 and died in 1560, Amannishahan was the concubine of the Yarkant King. She is also a famous poetess and musician in the 16th century. She had deep interests in poetry and music since she was a little child. She visited many social artists, poets and fork singers in her lifetime and spent 20 years sorted out the Twelve Muqam, which makes the folk music become a scientific, systematic and strict tune. As a rare treasure of the Uygur music, the Twelve Muqam is well known at home and abroad.

Twelve Muqam

Twelve Muqam is a large scale comprehensive art consists of song, dance, literature, poetry and folk dance performance. It is regarded as the encyclopedia and the live cultural relic of Uygur and was listed as an immaterial culture heritage in 2005.
