Located at the upper reaches of the Yellow River in central Gansu, China, Baiyin is famous for its mining resources. The city covers an area of 21,200 km² and has a population of 1,751,200. This copper city is part loess plateau and part desert with an altitude ranges from 1,275 to 3,321 meters.
History
Baiyin enjoys a long history. The area was under the control of central China before Tang Dynasty and was took control by Tibetan at the end of Tang Dynasty. There was mining industry as early as in Han Dynasty. The Silver Factory was set up here in Ming Dynasty and thus, the city got its name Baiyin (Chinese Pinyin of Silver). The city played an important role in Silk Road which connects China and Western countries.
Attractions
Baiyin is a place of strategic importance on the northern Silk Road with multi cultures. Yellow River Stone Forest formed by the rising of the Earth's crust is composed of many stone pillars in various sizes and shapes. Dunhuang Movie Set boasts pagoda forest, Paifang, Mingqing Street and numerous ancient buildings. Other attractions worth a visit include the Great Wall of Ming dynasty, Shoulushan Nature Reserve and Faquan Temple.
The most famous food in Baiyin is Jiangshui Noodles and mutton. Special local products include lamb, lamb's coat fur, and black melon seeds.
Transportation
There is no airport in Baiyin. But Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport 47 km away takes only an hour to the city, offering a good choice for air travelers. Baiyin air-ticket booking offices is located at No.81, people Road and inquiry is 0943-8251826.
Baiyin Railway Station is located on Gongnong Road in north of the city. There are trains from Lanzhou, Beijing, Chengdu, Xining and Yinchuan.
The Bus Station stands in No.2 Renmin Road operating buses to Lanzhou every twenty minutes from 6:40 am to 18:40 pm. There are also buses to Xian (7:00am), Xining (10:10am), Yinchuan (9:00 am, 11:00 am and 15:00 pm), Pingliang (6:30 am), Tianshui (6:30 am) and Dingxi (9:40 am).
The city bus charges one Yuan and can take you to most important places in Baiyin. Taxis are found everywhere with reasonable price. The flag price is CNY3 in the day and CNY3.5 at night.
Weather and Climate
Baiyin is part loess plateau, part desert with a semidry and dry climate. The annual average temperature is around 6��-9��(42.8°F-48.2°F) and annual precipitation is only 110-352 mm. January is the coldest month and over sixty percent of the city's rainfall gathers from July to September.
