Gyangtze Dzong Fortress, a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit, is a patriotism education base where the Tibetan people fought against the invading British.

Located on the Zong Mountain, Gyangtze County, Gyangtze Dzong Fortress is only 100 meters above the sea level. Because the terrain of the Gyangtze is flat, the Zong Mountain appears to stand highly. In order to resist the invaders, the Tibetan people built a wall 5 to 8 meters high, 4 meters wide on hillside. And along the wall and front cliff were built many forts, but in the war, the forts were destroyed by invaders. Now, only leave the ruins of forts and one room for the army commander. The local government has taken measures to protect them.

History

In 1840, the Britain launched the Opium War, so the people in Gyangtze as the main team began to fight against the invaders. In 1904, through the advanced weapons, the invaders killed the innocent people. The soldiers and the Tibetan people stubbornly resisted for more than two months. Due to the Qing government’s corruption and inefficiency, arms backward and lack of food, the Castle of Zong Mountain fell on July 7th. The guards in the castle were unwilling to be captured so all of them jumped the cliff.

Visiting Guide

During the anti-British battle, the soldiers and people in Tibet used the artillery on the fort used by Fu Ankang General in 1791 to resist the invasion. So the Anti-British Fort witnesses the bravery of Tibetan people. After the three months of Anti-British War, the soldiers and people in Tibet ran out of ammunition and food supply and they lost the battle. But they never surrendered to the army and finally they jumped on the north side of the cliff. Here stands the monument for Anti-British warriors now. The four stone steles recorded the process of Song Jun and He Ning patrolling the border in the era of Qian Long (1736-1796) have been well preserved, so Gyangtze Dzong Fortress also has the important value of cultural relics. By building the statues in the Meeting Hall, people can clearly know about the government office in the past. The government cadastres in the exhibition are very precious.
