Basha Miao Village

Located on mountains, about 7.5 kilometers away from Congjiang County, Kaili city in Guizhou province, Basha Miao Village consists of Lao Village, New Zaige Village, Wangjia Village, New Darongpo Village and the Xinzhuang Village. It is a home to over 2,000 residents living in 474 households. Being listed as the provincial key protection of minority village, Basha Miao Village is honored as the living fossil and ecological museum of the Miao culture. People here seldom contact with the outside world and live a self sufficient life in the mountains.

Unique customs

Basha is a typical ancienr Miao ethic village. The villagers still retain the original lifestyle of two thousand years ago. When you step in to the village, you will feel that you are in a primitive tribe, just as brought by the time tunnel to hundreds years ago momently. They still maintain the traditional life style, living in their wooden houses, dressing the traditional dyed clothing. The young people coming back form other places are not allowed into the village unless they put on their native clothes. You can see women mancipating the ancient wood spinning wheel easily, smell the sweetness of steamed rice wine and hear the strong rhythm of husking.

Basha Miao Village is the least affected by the modern civilization. They still live in a life style of “men till and women weave”. Visitors will be warmly welcomed by a group of dressed villagers carrying long rifles in the front gate of the village. When entering into the village, the guests will be invited to dancing in the Lusheng ground. The little girls may play with the guests actively, which is rare to see in other places.

Adult Ceremony

Everyman in Basha has to take a adult ceremony at the age of seven to fifteen. Usually they invite several companion to hunting and fishing. The more they prey, the stronger they are. The tribe leader shaves off all of the boy's hair except for the central part, which is coiled into a bun. After that, they are given a hunting rifle, which symbolizes that they are adult. This ceremony has existed for thousands of years. Therefore, the village is the last tribe of gunmen of China.

Worshiping Trees

As many other tribes take animals or materials as their totem, the Baisha people worships trees. They belive that the trees are ancestor’s souls. They respect these souls and the souls bless the Basha Village. Basha people respect trees since ancient times. The most grand ceremony in Basha is to worship the tree god. Everyone in Basha plants a tree in his or her lifetime and use the tree as their coffins when they died.

Love and Marriage in Basha

The love in Basha is free and unrestrained. They sing and dance to convey their affections. Everyone in Basha can sing very well love song. The boy can hold girls unscrupulously. Girls are willing to be hugged, for which shows that they are charming. If a girl was hugged by a stranger, she is an outstanding beauty in the eyes of Basha people.
