Dandong Travel Guide

Dandong is located in the frontier of Northeast of China, at the Northwest bank of Yalu River in the Southeast of Liaoning Province. It is on the border between China and North Korea, marked by the Yalu River. Also at this point, the river flows into Korea Bay.
 

History
 

In history, Dandong always took military importance due to its location. Dandong city, named as Andong city before 1965. In Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) it was under the jurisdiction of Liaodong state. After 1689, Qing Dynasty toke the frontier development policy, this region developed gradually. The city was named Dandong in 1965 for the meaning of a red eastern city.

Attraction
 

As a stronghold in history, Dandong is rich in historical sites, military remains as well as natural landscapes. Local attractions include Yalujiang Scenic Resort, Jinjiangshan Park, Korean War Memorial, Wulongshan Scenic Resort and so on.

One landmark of Dandong is Hushan Great Wall, which marks the eastern end of the start of the Ming Dynasty's extension to the Great Wall. Yalujiang Bridge (also called The China-Korea Friendship Bridge) is a must-see for historical value, and it is the connection between China and South Korea.

Dandong is the only city in Asia who has frontier port, airport, high-speed rail, river harbour, seaport and expressway. Consequently, getting into or around Dandong is comfortable and convenient.

By air: Dandong Langtou Airport is located in Langtou Town, 14 km south to the urban area. It provides planes to Beijng, Chengdu, Shanghai, Sanya, Jinan, Shenzhen, etc. City bus 5, 8, 10 as well as shuttle bus from the CAAC Booking Office at Jingjiang Street can reach here. Climate and Weather

The city of Dandong is located in middle latitudes of Eurasia, enjoying a warm temperate moist monsoon climate. It has four distinct seasons due to the influence of monsoon. The Dandong region is abundant in rainfall, marking it the most warm and moist place in northeast of China. The annual average temperature is 6.8-8.7��.

The north part of Dandong is the ghetto for Manchu, so the main foods in this area are wheat and rice. Besides, Dandong has a lot of Korean restaurants with most congregating on the street facing the river. Give the shiguo Banfan (stonepot rice), also known as bibimbop in Korean, a try as well as the huoguo (hot pot). If you think you could handle it, xiangla gourou (spicy dog) is something that could be made available to you. Dangtong, the biggest border city in China, owns modern products meeting the demands of daily life as well as various local products. Local specialties include Fengcheng Laojiao (a kind of aged liquor), Oviductus Ranae, tussah silk, Dandong azalea and some more.
