Yangpachen Hot Springs, 87 kilometers northwest of Lhasa, is reputed as a geothermal museum. In the past, the area was a pasture with underground hot waters. In 1970s, the government set a power station at here and harnessed the geothermal energy to produce much of the electricity for Lhasa. At present, hot springs have been developed out of the geothermal energy.
Trip to Yangbajain is not about scenery but for hot springs on plateau. Containing a large number of hydrogen sulfide, it is said the water is effective for many chronic diseases. At present, there are indoor and outdoor swimming pools which allow visitors to wash out their fatigues and dust on the route with a cost of CNY40 to CNY100. Remember do not take the bath too long or when you’re exhausted since you need a large amount of oxygen on the plateau with an altitude of 4,300 meters.
Yangpachen Hot Springs is most attractive in early morning. The geothermal field, diffused with mist since the temperature is still low, looks like a fairy land. If you are lucky enough, you may encounter the eruption of hot water well which is very splendid. In winter, it’s very romantic to watch snow falling while taking a bath in the hot springs.
