Mt. Wudangshan, land of martial art and cradle of Taoism, is one of the eight Summer Resorts in China and its ancient building complex has been listed on the World Heritage List.
Located in Danjiangkou in Shiyan City, Hubei Province, Mt.Wudangshan covers an area of 312 square kilometers and is one place in China famous for Taoism. Mt.Wudangshan has not only strange and beautiful natural landscape, but also rich and colorful cultural landscape. Mt.Wudangshan is a famous mountain scenic spot with 72 peaks, 36 rocks, 24 gullies, 11 caves, 10 stones. Ancient Building Complex in the Wudang Mountain, World Heritage, is magnificent. The emperors regarded the temple in Mt.Wudangshan as the royal temple to build and according to statistics, from Tang Dynasty (618-907) to Qing Dynasty (1644-1911); more than 500 temples had been built.
Bronze Temple
Built in 1307, Bronze Temple is 3 meters high, 2.8 meters wide and 2.4 meters deep, which is the earliest existing, copper wood structure building in China.
Xuanyue Gate
Xuanyue Gate, another name for Zhishixuanyue, was built in 1552, which lies 4,000 meters away in the east of Wudangshan County. Xuanyue Gate is the first portal when you step into Mt.Wudangshan. The structure is balanced and rigorous. The decoration is ornate and the carved skill is meticulous and careful. The people, animals and flowers carved on the buildings are the stone archway masterpieces and are the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) stone carving art treasures.
Nanyan
Nanyan is a holy land for Taoists to become supernatural beings, which is the most beautiful scenery among the 36 rocks. Nanyan Palace was built during 1285-1310 and was expanded in 1412. Located under the Duyang Rock, Nanyan covers an area of 90,000 square meters with Nanyan Palace covering an area of 3,505 square meters. The main building is Taiyizhenqing Hall built before 1310, 11 meters wide and 6.8 meters high. The windows, the doors, the beams and the columns are all covered with stone. Longtou Incense Burner 3 meters long and 0.33 meter wide has high artistic and scientific significance.
Zixiao Palace
Located under the Zhanqi Peak in the southeast of Mt Wudangshan, Zixiao Palace was founded in the Northern Song Dynasty (1119-1125), reconstructed in 1552 and overhauled in Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), which is one of the Taoist buildings in large scale and well-preserved. Covering an area of 6,854 square meters, Zixiao Palace constitutes a group of row upon row of buildings. Covering an area of 358.8 square meters, Zixiao Palace, 18.3 meters high, 29.9 meters wide and 12 meters deep, is the most representative of the wooden building in Mt Wudangshan. The roof of the hall is covered with peacock blue glazed tile. The decoration is rich, colorful and gorgeous, which is rare in other buildings.
Gold Hall
As the first batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit, Gold Hall built in Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) is a bronze wooden structure palatial architecture and covers an area of 160 square meters. 12 pillars stand in the four angles and the ground is paved with purple smooth stones. An altar is set in front of the screen before the back wall. A horizontal inscribed board is above the altar with four words inscribed by Emperor Kangxi (a great emperor in Qing Dynasty) on it. The other parts of the hall use the lost wax casting. Although the hall has suffered hundred years’ bitter cold and scorching heat, it is still brilliant as before, which shows the high skill of China and id regarded as brilliant pearl among ancient and existing buildings.
Taiji Lake
Relying on the Mt.Wudangshan and the Danjiangkou Rservoir, the largest artificial lake in Asia, a lake appears after the storage of the water in Danjiangkou Reservoir. Covering an area of 80 square kilometers, Taiji Lake will become a place for sightseeing, leisure and vacation.
Wudang Sacred Way
Crutches, jade carving, wood carving, ceramics and other crafts with strong local characteristics can be found in Wudang Sacred Way located in Wudang County.
