Value on Ethics
Chinese traditional family values the ethical relationship among family members a lot. Different one should act and play the family role morally based on one’s specific position in the family.
Wulun (five human relationships): Confucianism pays great attention to the ‘Wulun’, including the basic relationships of the monarch and his subjects, the father and his son, the husband and his wife, brothers and friends. Among these traditional families, the main relationships are the ones between the father and his son, the husband and his wife, and brothers. Thereamong, the principal one is the relationship between the father and his son. A son should always obey his father’s decision. Besides, the Confucianism believes people should bear different duty and responsibility in the family.
Sangang Wuchang (Sangang-three cardinal guides; Wuchang-five constant virtues): The three cardinal guides include the monarch is the guide of his subjects, the father is the guide of his son and the husband is the guide of his wife. These three are the basic three behavioral norms in Chinese traditional social relationship. And among these families, the children should obey their parents, the wife should obey her husband; and the male one (husband and also a father) also should set an good example.
Then, ‘Wuchang’ refers to ‘Ren’ (kindheartedness), ‘Yi’ (upright), ‘Li’ (courtesy), ‘Zhi’ (reasonable) and ‘Xin’ (trustworthy) five ones. They are the ways to get along with people and the ethical values recommended by Confucius. It is correct for people to aspire after these ethical values.
Clan is a social group consists of generations with the same ancestor; including many families inherit the same surname. What’s more, clan lays great emphasis on kinship which is regarded as the extension of the whole family.
Collectivism: these traditional families pay high attention to clan. The family members even put the family’s interest above the individual one. Personal one should obey the willingness of the whole family.
Carry the family on: Chinese traditional family's value of parentage which means one of the most important duties of family members is to make sure there is no lack of successors to carry the family on. Since after the females grown up, they will get married; it is only the male ones to pass on.
Filiality includes to respect, to offer duties and also to take care of the elders, especially children to their parents. It is a traditional virtue. And Confucianism makes the filiality more widely, not only to parents, and own elderships, but others.
Advocate on ancestor worship: to worship the ancestor is one way to express filiality. The major time includes some traditional Chinese festivals, such as the Tomb-Sweeping Day (on annual April 5) and the Double Ninth Festival (September 9) etc. Through ancestor worship, on the one hand, these later generations can show their respect and miss to ancestors; on the other hand, it is believed the late ancestors on heaven will bless their later generations healthy and happy.
