Medog Nature Reserve is located in the Territory of Medog County, covering an area of 62,620 hectares, which pays more protection to the vertical landscape and the rare plants and animals.
Medog Nature Reserve is located at the round of the Yarlung Zangbo Canyon with the sea level above 750 to 4800 meters. The river in here is deep and the gorge is long with many waterfalls and the mountains straightly going into the sky. In 1985, the Medog Nature Reserve was promoted into the list of national level. With various species, Medog Natural Reserve is known as the Natural Museum in Tibet.

This area is located at subtropical latitude, but because of its special geographical environment, this area exist different forest vegetation types from tropical plants to cold temperate zone. There are more than 3000 kinds of higher plants, in which 21 national key protected animal species are in here. The national key protected plants include takin, long tail monkey, assamese macaque, tiger, Medog wingless insects and so on.
Because of the function of the barrier, the average temperature is above 20 centigrade with annual rainfall 2358 millimeters. The vertical zone distribution is obvious. More than 40 rare animals listed as national key protected animals are in the Medog Nature Reserve so that it has the reputation of Natural Zoo. Within the protection zone, no people inhabit in it. Though the local people have the habit of hunting, they can hardly go into it with many cliffs and rapids. There are also special management people in the edge area so the original state is well preserved.
