Bayi Town, located in Nyingchi in Tibet and 400 kilometers from Lhasa, is a political, economic and cultural district of eastern Tibet about 2,900 meters above sea level.
Located in the Shore of Niyang River, Bayi Town had only several temples and dozens of families in ancient times. After the peaceful liberation of Tibet in 1951, People’s Liberation Army has begun to build this place. Having a population of 35, 000, the city building area of Bayi Town covers an area of five square kilometers. After 1950s, the wool spinning, electric power, wood processing, papermaking, building materials industries have been built. Here becomes a new multifunctional town.
Inheritance Significance
As an important aggregation and trading center, the business here is prosperous. Many goods are from Lhasa, Chengdu, even Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and other places. The handworks and other local things in the counties around Bayi Town flow to all over the China through Bayi Town. Surrounded the Bayi Town, the sceneries here are also beautiful and charming. Besides, this place is also an important transportation hub in Tibet, connecting the east, west and south three directions of Tibet. The rhythm of people’s life here is faster than Lhasa. A lot of edible fungi here are the important economic sources of the residents here.
Geography and Weather
Bayi Town is located in the valley area which is very open and wide. Because of the influence of warm air in the bay of Bengal, the weather in Bayi Town in Nyingchi is very warm and humid. The rainy season is from July to September. Due to the concentrated rainfall and longer duration, the flood disasters frequently appear.
It is about 20 kilometers from Bayi Town to Nyingchi. This town is surrounded by green hills and clear waters. The clear water of Niyang River goes through the Bayi Town. The original forest here covers an area of 2,640,000 hectares. The wood accumulation amount is about 48 billion cubic meters, which is listed as the first place all over the whole country. The water resource is very rich. If the power station is built, the hydroenergy will be several times as large as the Three Gorges power station.
Tourist Attractions
Rijimuco Lake and Huge Cypress are the two sceneries. Besides, the village Bangnacun has a Mulberry King 7.04 meters high with a history of about 1600 years and diameter of 13 meters. It is said that the tree was planted by Sontzen Gampo (a famous Tibet King) and Princess Wencheng.
Towards the east of Bayi Town, the interchange of Niyang River and Yarlung Zangbo River is located in here. The river is broad and the face of the river is like a mirror. So people can take raft here and browse down about 50 kilometers. It is the place for the starting point of Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon.
10 kilometers away from the Bayi Town is the Bajie Town with 10 hectares of unique precious variety-Giant Cypress. Among these tree, the one 50 meters high with a history of about 2500 years and a diameter about 58 meters is called the King Giant Cypress and Live Cultural Relic.
