Nanning Travel Guide
As a commercial and communication center, opening China to Southeast Asia, Nanning is full of colorful sights and lush parks where members of the Zhuang ethnic group live in.
Nanning, capital of Guangxi, is the political, economic and cultural center of Guangxi. With a history of nearly 1,700 years, it has profound historical culture, and it is the hometown of jequirity. Nanning takes an area of 22,112 square meters and the population of 6.66 million. Nanning has advantaged natural environment, so it is praised as “Green City”.
Ancient Nanning belonged to a nation-territory called Bayue, and did not come under official Chinese imperial jurisdiction until Daxing County was established around it in the first year of Eastern Jin Emperor Daxing (318 AD), with Nanning (or what was then Nanning) as its county seat. In the eighth year (634 AD) of the reign of Zhen Guan in the Tang Dynasty, the soon-to-be emperor Tang Taizong named Nanning Yongzhou, from which the word "Yong (shortened form for Nanning)" was later derived; not until the first year (1314 AD) of the reign of Taiding in the Yuan Dynasty was the place renamed "Nanning" - meaning 'peaceful southern border' - by the central government. Nanning was designated as both the capital of Guangxi Province as well as the center of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in 1958, nine years after the founding of the People's Republic of China. It is the political, economic, traffic, cultural, scientific and technological and information center of the whole of Guangxi Province.
Bordering on China and Vietnam, Detian Waterfall is Asia’s largest and world’s fourth largest transnational waterfall. Chunzuo Leaning Tower was one of the eight leaning towers and enjoyed equal popularity to Leaning Tower of Pisa. What makes visitors surprised is that whichever the direction you stand to see the tower, it will lean to your side.
Yangmei Ancient Town preserves best the Ming and Qing architecture in Nanning. Mt. Dingshi Ruins is one of the most representative Shell Mound Ruins in Neolithic age with the largest area, the most excavated relics and richest sites in Guangxi. Guangxi Museum collects the most bronze drums in China, and it showcases Guangxi revolutionary relics, Guangxi historical relics, Guangxi ethnic folk customs and ancient bronze drums and so on.
By air: Nanning Wuxu International Airport has flights to main cities of China, and also has international flights to Hong Kong, Hanoi, Bangkok, Manila and Jakarta.
Airport bus: airport bus starts according to flight condition, and it operates from 5:30 am to the last flight. The starting station downtown is Nanning Aviation Ticket Office (near Nanning Railway Station), and it operates from 5:30 to 19:00. The ticket charges CNY15/person.
City bus: city bus No. 301 runs between airport and downtown, and the ticket is CNY2/person.
Taxi: it is about CNY 40-50, about 40 minutes.
By train: As a capital city, transport is never a problem. Nanning railway connects China’s trunk railways in the north, and it can carry you to Zhanjiang and Guangzhou in the east, Qinzhou, Fangcheng and Beihai in the south, and Hanoi (Vietnam) in the southwest. Nanning Railway Station has trains to main cities of China every day, and trains to main regions within Guangxi Province.
Long-distance bus: Nanning has seven long-distance bus stations in downtown, and the service time is basically between 6:00 and 23:00.
General Bus Station and Landdong Bus Station are two main ones, and there are buses to districts within Guangxi, like Guilin, Liuzhou, Yulin, Beihai and Qinzhou, 15-30 minutes interval for each; among interprovincial buses, there are more buses to Guangzhou and Shenzhen, and also there are buses to Chengdu, Zhuhai and Chongqing and etc every day.
City bus: Nanning city buses are mostly self-service ticketing, and the ticket mostly costs CNY1 and CNY2 for air-conditioning buses. The service time of bus is from 6:00 to 23:00, and passenger can see specific running lines and ticket price at every bus stations.
By taxi: The flag fall rate is CNY7 for the first two kilometers, and CNY1.6/km for per additional km, besides, there is CNY2 as fuel surcharge it the total rate within CNY 20.
Nanning is humid subtropical monsoon climate, and is plentiful of sunshine. It has long and distinct summer and winter. Summer is hot, and the highest temperature is in July and August with the average level of 28.2°C (82.76°F)), the coldest day in January has the average temperature of 12.8°C(55°F)). Spring and autumn are wild, and the rainy days are mostly in summer.
Food and Restaurant
Nanning cuisine shares many similarities with that of Cantonese cuisine. It is generally light with dishes placing an emphasis on the freshness of the ingredients. For lovers of spicy food, try old friend noodles (laoyoumian). A thin crepe filled with green onions (juantongfen) is a delicious local snack. Another local favorite is a crescent shaped dumpling (nanning fengjiaohuang) filled with pork and a tasty seafood sauce. Over at Mingsheng Lu is Xiaodulai Shijie, a great food street where you can eat your way up and down the street.
Snack Street on Zhongshan Road is the most popular food street in Nanning. In addition, you can find delicious food on Xinming Road, Qixing Road, Sixian Road (kinds of rice noodles), Yuanhu Road (porridge), Gonghe Road (mainly sea snail).

Zhuang brocade and embroidered ball are representative of the most famous handcrafts. Nanning local fruit has longan, lychee, pineapple, mango and pomelo. Besides, Nanning’s leather products and gold and sliver ornaments are nice.
Main shopping areas are concentrated on the districts of Chaoyang Road, Xinning Street, Xinming Road and Qixing Road. Xiguang Road is the busiest and blooming open-air night market, and Xinning Street is the first choice to buy gold and sliver ornaments. Shopping malls and brand shops can be the choices to buy Zhuang brocade, but if you want find good and cheap products, you can select that in the shops on Xiguang Road and Qixing Road.
Nanning, as the cultural center and historical and cultural city, has profound traditional culture deposits, and also now as a modern city, Nanning’s amusement activity is rich and various. When night is coming, Nanning begins to show its charming nightlife. Nightclub, bars, coffee shops and gymnasium are the nice place to relax.
