As one of the essential tourism landscape in Tibet, the Maimo Cave is a wonderfulness of nature, abounds in all kinds of oddly-shaped stalagmites.

Situated in the area of Baqen County, about 600 kilometers away from Lhasa, Maimo Cave is one of the essential attractions in Tibet. Featuring in numerous various stalagmites, it has been a peculiar landscape in Tibet. In addition to the near folk customs and religion, Maimo Cave becomes more miraculous.

A Natural Karst Cave

Reputed as the most breathtaking karst cave among the numerous natural caves perched in mountains in eastern Nagqu region, also known as Fairy Chamber, Maimo Cave is a masterpiece made by nature.

Inner Cave

At the gate of the cave stands a peristele on both sides with the height of a person as if two guardians which are on duty at the gate. Not far from the gate is a sacrificial altar piled by stones. It is said it was a famous holy place for worshipers toward the Buddha. There are many tiny grottoes interior the cave, hung with pendent icicles. The crystal droplets are dropping along the icicles, with the melodious ticking sound. Besides, three big humanoid rocks which are known as the Yama and his two assistants, the black and the white. There are many other figures of Buddha formed by nature. Go ahead, tourists can see two bigger caves. Both are unfathomable. Folklore has it that a hole is as long as 100 kilometers and another hole is 200 kilometers, have a great value of scientific research and exploration.

When to visit

Owing to its location of highland area, the Maimo Cave is best visited during the golden season of March, April May and June for the heavy snow will seal the mountain during November to the next March while debris flows occur in July and August.

What to eat

Boiled Oil Spleen is a popular dish mainly prevails among the Tibetan autonomous prefectures. The main ingredients are sheep spleen and sheep oil. It is specialized in fresh flavor and fat but not greasy. Other dishes like Detonation Braised Lamb and Blow Liver are very popular for Tibetan people.

What to Buy

Nagqu area is teemed with Chinese caterpillar fungus. Growing in the region with the altitude of above 4,500 meters, Chinese caterpillar funguses are functioning for curing chronic cough, dyspnea, bloody phlegm and so on. It has been an inevitable item for travelers to Tibet.
