Luoyang is well-known as one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China and the capital city of nine dynasties. Its high prosperity left us a large number of historical relics that could be found in Luoyang Museum.
Originally built inside Guanlin Temple in 1958, and then moved to the downtown of Luoyang in 1970s, Luoyang Museum is the only comprehensive historical museum in Louyang. In order to display more historical relics and receive more visitors, a new museum was set up at the south of Luohe River and north of Sui and Tang Dynasty Ruins Botanical Garden, and opened to the public on April 1, 2011.
Covering a total area of 200,000 square meters with a construction area of 62,000 square meters, Luoyang New Museum displays over 11,000 historical relics. It is composed of one permanent exhibition and seven theme exhibitions, namely Exhibition of Heluo Civilization, Exhibition of Ancient Stone Carving Art, Exhibition of Calligraphy and Painting, Exhibition of Ancient Treasure of Luoyang, Exhibition of Pottery Figurines of Han and Tang Dynasties, Exhibition of Tri-colored Earthen Wares of Tang Dynasty, Exhibition of Qing Imperial Cultural Relics and Exhibition of Ancient Fresco Art.
Exhibition of Heluo Civilization
Exhibition of Heluo Civilization is the only permanent exhibition that lies on first floor. It is divided into five sections based on time periods, covering the prehistoric age (before 21st century BC), Xia, Shang (about 16th century BC-11th century BC) and Zhou Period (2100BC-770BC), Han (202BC-220AD) and Wei Period (220AD-265AD), Sui (581-618) and Tang (618-907) and the Five Dynasties (907-979), and Song Dynasties (960-1279). The exhibition hall displays the high prosperity of Luoyang being the capital cities of 13 dynasties through historical relics, pictures, characters and multi-media.
Exhibition of Qing Imperial Cultural relics
Over 2,000 Qing imperial cultural relics from the Forbidden City showcase in the exhibition room. Firstly you will see a huge plan of Palace of Benevolent Peace, the place for mother of the emperor holding large activities. In the exhibition hall, you can see many statues and pagoda of Tibetan Buddhism with well combination of Han and Tibetan cultural arts, and imperial furniture that reveals the daily life and high respect of Buddhism of Qing imperial families.
Exhibition of Ancient Stone Carving Art
The exhibition room consists of two parts: religious stone carving and stone tablets. Luoyang boasts of many Buddhism stone carving that from temples combining Gandhara Art and Chinese style. Moreover, there are stone tiger of Northern Wei Dynasty, stone sheep of Eastern Han Dynasty, kwan-yin statue and stone bufonid of Tang Dynasty. Since ancient times, bufonid is regarded as kind of deities, symbolizing good luck, wealth and health. Besides, all kinds of stone tablets and epitaphs are on show in the room, revealing the categories and development of Chinese characters.
Exhibition of Tri-colored Earthen Wares of Tang Dynasty
The exhibition room has an area of 800 square meters with over 200 tri-colored glazed pottery of the Tang Dynasty on display. Feudal society reached it peak in Tang Dynasty when many foreigners came to China to study and communicate. So many figures are in the image of camels, horses with beautiful colors. Some figurines of women are elegant and chubby, showing the high social position of women during that period.
